Next week at the NAHJ Student Chapter at Texas State in San Marcos, they'll be holding "A Night of Speakers"
Tuesday April 13, 2010 - 7pm NAHJ Student Chapter - Texas State San Marcos Free
Patricio Espinoza & Pablo Espinoza (Pablo is in town visiting so I recruited him to talk about how a journalist can transition into public service. He is CA's Deputy Director Speaker's Office of Member Services)
We also are planning a multimedia seminar in the Rio Grande Valley in the Fall. Some people have stepped up and asked for us to go to deep in South Texas for an all-day seminar. We haven't decided the location or date, but would expected it in the Upper Valley. I will update you once we get the date and site selected.
It's imperative for members to renew their membership to NAHJ. Right now, our student members are nearly as many as our professional members. So I encourage you professionals to renew your membership. If you do, you'll get many benefits, including a discount to our NAHJ National Convention in Denver from June 23-26. So do it.
If you want to run for the NAHJ Board, we have several spots available on the board. Every spot with the exception of the region reps will be up this year. It's a lot of fun being on the board, while also working hard on the future of the group. Many people talk about NAHJ and how to improve the group, well, here is your chance. If you run for the board, you can effect change and make NAHJ a better organization. Start collecting your signatures. Just write: I the NAHJ's member's name support the petition of the person running for the name of the position. We will accept that in an e-mail form and it will count as an electronic signature. You must turn it in by the April 30th.
One other thing, the NAHJ Board will soon decide who will be inducted into the NAHJ 2010 Hall of Fame Class. This is not an easy selection as there are many great nominees every year. So we need you to turn in your nominess with the application by April 19, 2010. Here is the link for the nominations http://www.nahj.org/2010/03/nahj-2010-hall-of-fame/
Please submit a name of a deserving NAHJ journalist who should be considered for this honor.
There are many other updates for students. If you want to apply for student campus, student projects or scholarships, go to nahj.org The deadline to apply is at the end of the month. If you want a chance to go to the national conference for free or get scholarship money for school, apply.
Last thing, I have heard from a few sites about wanting to sponsor the NAHJ Regional Conference in 2011. The first year is always hard due to the election etc, but the second year, we usually have more time to prepare for it. I have heard from many of the same cities from the past, but want to see if there are any other cities interested. Well, let me know so we can make a decision soon and start planning for it.
Don't forget to sign up for the NAHJ Convention in Denver. It's my understanding the early bird registration period will be extended. It's a great price, $250. You should take advantage of it before it goes away. We all know it's expensive to go to a conference. So any time we can get a discount, we should take advantage of it. Go to the following link to register early http://www.nahj.org/2009/11/2010conventiondenver/
That's it for now.
