NAHJ Region 5 Update May 5

I am happy to report we have another student chapter. This one is the University of Houston. Go Cougars! It was made possible by having our regional conference in Houston. Those students had been rallying all year long to get the 10 student members to join to start the group. When I met many of them last October in Houston when NAHJ held a reception there, I knew they would come through sooner or later. It wasn't until they saw NAHJ in action at the regional conference, then we were able to get the additional memberships so they could become a student chapter. Congrats! I am proud of you'all.

The NAHJ Board voted our two new NAHJ Hall of Famers. One of them is from Texas and it's WFAA Anchor Gloria Campos. I am proud to say fellow Tejano Brandon Benavides nominated her. All of us Tejanos stuck together and voted for Gloria. It was an honor to put her into the Hall of Fame. Gloria is a class act and she deserves to be in the NAHJ Hall of Fame. If you have seen her work in Dallas or have ever seen her at NAHJ, she is always nice and friendly. She has donated money to NAHJ and been a great member. Congratulations Gloria. The NAHJ Convention is right around the corner. It's June 23-26 in Denver. NAHJ has extended the early bird registration until May 14. The cost is $250. It's a great deal if you are going to the convention. So you should take advantage of this early bird special. For more info on the conference, go to this link http://www.nahj.org/2010/04/early-bird-registration-extended-until-may-14/

We also are offering assistance to NAHJ members who want to go to this conference. All current NAHJ members are eligible. You can get assistance by either getting your registration comped or a free flight. You will have to pay for your lodging. You must present a few things, like a resume, an essay and your W-2 to be considered. Go to this link and check it out http://www.nahj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/2010-Convention-Assistance-Application-Form.pdf

Don't forget we will be having elections coming up for NAHJ. We will have a contested Presidential election for the first since 2002. We also will have several other positions contested. It's the first we have had so many contested positions. I would like to thank the NAHJ Board Members who recruited people and those newbies who decided to run for office. Good Luck to all those involved. You should be getting information soon on when to vote online. Of course, the winners will be announced at the NAHJ Conference in Denver. Region 5 has become more active lately and we have the second highest number of members of al the regions. In the past, we used to be the fourth highest. So please get involved and  I hope you will cast your vote.

We are getting closer to make a decision on the regional conference for 2011. San Marcos, El Paso, Dallas and McAllen have expressed interested in hosting it. We were in San Marcos, Dallas and El Paso recently. It's been awhile since McAllen. I am leaning towards that site, especially because we just added a student chapter in the Upper Valley. I hear a student chapter may be coming in the Lower Valley. With a year to plan for it, we should find more sponsors and be able to hold a successful conference. Those are my thoughts right now on it.

By the way, at our last NAHJ Board Meeting in LA, we voted to opplose the Comcast merger with NBC. I am proud to say I seconded the nomination on this matter, This is something that is close to my heart and I strongly believe these type of consolidations are bad for the news industry. It will lead to fewer jobs and eliminate voices in the news media. Here is our statement on the matter, but as long as I am your region rep, I will vote for matter like this because it's bad for the industry. http://www.nahj.org/2010/04/hispanic-journalists-oppose-comcastnbc-universal-merger/
