Convention Notes and NAHJ Election 2010 To Open Up

Region 5 Members,

I wanted to touch base with you on a few quick notes before we hit the busy summer months.

1) NAHJ will be holding elections for half of the board, including all of the positions that aren't regional reps, and the student rep. If you want to be elgible to vote in the upcoming elections, you have to be a professional member of NAHJ to vote for the professional board spots and a student member to vote for the student rep position. If you haven't signed up or renewed your membership, you have until Friday, June 4, to do that.

All you have to do is go to www.nahj.org and sign up. Your membership will ensure you have a vote in the 2010 NAHJ Board Elections. For the first time in years, we have many contested races. So your voice and your vote needs to be heard. Here's a link to the candidates running http://www.nahj.org/2010/05/2010nahjcandidates/ Online voting starts June 11 and continues through June 26.The winners will be announced at the NAHJ Convention.

2) The NAHJ Convention is right around the corner. It's being held from June 23-26 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. It should be an exciting time and we are encouraging members, non-members, journalists and media company reps to attend. It still isn't too late to get a discount and sign up for the convention at www.nahj.org You can still reserve a room at the Hyatt Regency in Denver by calling 888-421-1442 or visit https://resweb.passkey.com/go/58947a0b We encourage you to attend. Tell a friend and get people to the convention. Find roommates and others to room together so you can enjoy the conference and a great time at the annual convention.

3) I really haven't heard much feedback for the regional conference lately. I believe it is time to go back to the Rio Grande Valley. I am leaning on making that the site for the regional conference next year. We need to start working on finding sponsors, volunteers and a location. I will coordinate that with the RGV group and the UTPA Student group.

That's it for now. I hope to see you in Denver. Remember for elgible voters, vote in the NAHJ Election and let your voice be heard.

NAHJ Region 5 Update May 5

I am happy to report we have another student chapter. This one is the University of Houston. Go Cougars! It was made possible by having our regional conference in Houston. Those students had been rallying all year long to get the 10 student members to join to start the group. When I met many of them last October in Houston when NAHJ held a reception there, I knew they would come through sooner or later. It wasn't until they saw NAHJ in action at the regional conference, then we were able to get the additional memberships so they could become a student chapter. Congrats! I am proud of you'all.

The NAHJ Board voted our two new NAHJ Hall of Famers. One of them is from Texas and it's WFAA Anchor Gloria Campos. I am proud to say fellow Tejano Brandon Benavides nominated her. All of us Tejanos stuck together and voted for Gloria. It was an honor to put her into the Hall of Fame. Gloria is a class act and she deserves to be in the NAHJ Hall of Fame. If you have seen her work in Dallas or have ever seen her at NAHJ, she is always nice and friendly. She has donated money to NAHJ and been a great member. Congratulations Gloria. To read about the Hall of Fame nominees, go to this link. http://www.nahj.org/2010/04/two-top-journalists-tapped-for-2010-nahj-hall-of-fame-honors/

The NAHJ Convention is right around the corner. It's June 23-26 in Denver. NAHJ has extended the early bird registration until May 14. The cost is $250. It's a great deal if you are going to the convention. So you should take advantage of this early bird special. For more info on the conference, go to this link http://www.nahj.org/2010/04/early-bird-registration-extended-until-may-14/

We also are offering assistance to NAHJ members who want to go to this conference. All current NAHJ members are eligible. You can get assistance by either getting your registration comped or a free flight. You will have to pay for your lodging. You must present a few things, like a resume, an essay and your W-2 to be considered. Go to this link and check it out http://www.nahj.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/2010-Convention-Assistance-Application-Form.pdf

Don't forget we will be having elections coming up for NAHJ. We will have a contested Presidential election for the first since 2002. We also will have several other positions contested. It's the first we have had so many contested positions. I would like to thank the NAHJ Board Members who recruited people and those newbies who decided to run for office. Good Luck to all those involved. You should be getting information soon on when to vote online. Of course, the winners will be announced at the NAHJ Conference in Denver. Region 5 has become more active lately and we have the second highest number of members of al the regions. In the past, we used to be the fourth highest. So please get involved and  I hope you will cast your vote.

We are getting closer to make a decision on the regional conference for 2011. San Marcos, El Paso, Dallas and McAllen have expressed interested in hosting it. We were in San Marcos, Dallas and El Paso recently. It's been awhile since McAllen. I am leaning towards that site, especially because we just added a student chapter in the Upper Valley. I hear a student chapter may be coming in the Lower Valley. With a year to plan for it, we should find more sponsors and be able to hold a successful conference. Those are my thoughts right now on it.

By the way, at our last NAHJ Board Meeting in LA, we voted to opplose the Comcast merger with NBC. I am proud to say I seconded the nomination on this matter, This is something that is close to my heart and I strongly believe these type of consolidations are bad for the news industry. It will lead to fewer jobs and eliminate voices in the news media. Here is our statement on the matter, but as long as I am your region rep, I will vote for matter like this because it's bad for the industry. http://www.nahj.org/2010/04/hispanic-journalists-oppose-comcastnbc-universal-merger/

That's it for now. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter at NAHJ Region 5 or on Facebook at NAHJ Region 5. We'll talk to you later and God Bless You in your daily work as a journalist. If you need anythiing, please call me at 361-425=6108 or e-mail me at mannydelarosa@yahoo.com

Multimedia Events This Week and the More News from Region 5

Dear NAHJ Region 5 Members,

Our next multimedia conference is in El Paso on Saturday, April 10th on the campus of the University of Texas El Paso. Take advantage of this full-day of intensive workshops which will include training on: editing video using Final Cut Pro, using the latest in Social Media for better storytelling and journalism, creating your blog inexpensively using Wordpress, learning PhotoShop, and improving how you use audio to tell stories more effectively and with more impact. Space is limited in the workshops so register and reserve a space today! The cost is $20 for NAHJ Students and $40 for NAHJ Professionals. Sign up today. http://www.nahj.org/2009/12/multimedia-and-social-media-day-on-the-border-for-journalists/

On the same day in San Antonio, our new newest potential chapter in San Antonio at Our Lady of Lake University will be having a membership drive and multimedia workshop. It''s called Digital Multimedia Gathering Tools and Tips. They will be offering classes on digital cameras, equipment basics, software basics, Production 101 on story telling and using Social Media to publish and promote on Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc. It's free for OLLU students and $25 for others and will include a free lunch. It starts at 9 am and ends at 3:30 pm. It's being held at OLLU Campus, St. Martin Hall, Room 104. For more information, contact Kay O'Donnell at modonnell@lake.ollusa.edu by April 8 or call her at 210-434-6711 210-434-6711 ext 2112.

Next week at the NAHJ Student Chapter at Texas State in San Marcos, they'll be holding "A Night of Speakers"

Tuesday April 13, 2010 - 7pm NAHJ Student Chapter - Texas State San Marcos Free
Patricio Espinoza & Pablo Espinoza (Pablo is in town visiting so I recruited him to talk about how a journalist can transition into public service. He is CA's Deputy Director Speaker's Office of Member Services)

We also are planning a multimedia seminar in the Rio Grande Valley in the Fall. Some people have stepped up and asked for us to go to deep in South Texas for an all-day seminar. We haven't decided the location or date, but would expected it in the Upper Valley. I will update you once we get the date and site selected.

It's imperative for members to renew their membership to NAHJ. Right now, our student members are nearly as many as our professional members. So I encourage you professionals to renew your membership. If you do, you'll get many benefits, including a discount to our NAHJ National Convention in Denver from June 23-26. So do it.

If you want to run for the NAHJ Board, we have several spots available on the board. Every spot with the exception of the region reps will be up this year.  It's a lot of fun being on the board, while also working hard on the future of the group. Many people talk about NAHJ and how to improve the group, well, here is your chance. If you run for the board, you can effect change and make NAHJ a better organization. Start collecting your signatures. Just write: I the NAHJ's member's name support the petition of the person running for the name of the position. We will accept that in an e-mail form and it will count as an electronic signature. You must turn it in by the April 30th.

One other thing, the NAHJ Board will soon decide who will be inducted into the NAHJ 2010 Hall of Fame Class. This is not an easy selection as there are many great nominees every year. So we need you to turn in your nominess with the application by April 19, 2010. Here is the link for the nominations http://www.nahj.org/2010/03/nahj-2010-hall-of-fame/
Please submit a name of a deserving NAHJ journalist who should be considered for this honor.

There are many other updates for students. If you want to apply for student campus, student projects or scholarships, go to nahj.org The deadline to apply is at the end of the month. If you want a chance to go to the national conference for free or get scholarship money for school, apply.

Last thing, I have heard from a few sites about wanting to sponsor the NAHJ Regional Conference in 2011. The first year is always hard due to the election etc, but the second year, we usually have more time to prepare for it. I have heard from many of the same cities from the past, but want to see if there are any other cities interested. Well, let me know so we can make a decision soon and start planning for it.
Don't forget to sign up for the NAHJ Convention in Denver. It's my understanding the early bird registration period will be extended. It's a great price, $250. You should take advantage of it before it goes away. We all know it's expensive to go to a conference. So any time we can get a discount, we should take advantage of it. Go to the following link to register early http://www.nahj.org/2009/11/2010conventiondenver/

That's it for now.

Latest from Region 5

NAHJ Region 5 Members,

The feedback is coming in from our NAHJ Region 5 Conference. We are learning what worked at the conference in Houston and what didn't. We are taking notes and working on a guide so we can start working towards our next regional conference. Students from El Gato at the University of Houston really enjoyed the conference and sent me a nice e-mail saying that. They are getting closer to organizing a local chapter. When we host these conferences, that's one of the goals is to energize the locals so we are happy to accomplish our goals. I am starting to consider sites for the 2011 Region 5 Conference. So if you are involved with a local NAHJ group and are interested in organizing a conference, send me an e-mail so we can start planning.

Our next multimedia conference is in El Paso on April 10th on the campus of the University of Texas El Paso. For more information, contact Kay O'Donnell at modonnell@lake.ollusa.edu by April 8 or call her at 210-434-6711 ext 2112.

I am at the NAHJ Board Meeting in LA as I write. We are talking about elections for the NAHJ Board. Up for the election will be the non region rep positions, including President, VP of Broadcast and VP Print. You must turn in your petitions with 25 signatures by April 30th to be eligible for the election. So here's  your chance to get involved and run for a position. Good Luck! We also will be voting on making the Student Rep position a voting member spot on the board and creating an Academic position on the NAHJ Board.

Don't forget the 28th Annual Multimedia and Career Expo in Denver "El Grito Across the Rockies" will be held from June 23-26. Thanks to the Gannett Foundation, you can sign up early for $250 and save $75. This rate will only be around for a short time so register early and Meet NAHJ in Denver http://www.nahj.org/2009/11/2010conventiondenver/ The deadline for Student Projects/Student Campus is March 31st. I encourage all students interested in learning about the industry to apply for these programs. http://www.nahj.org/2010/02/2010-convention-student-projectsstudent-campus-applications-open/

One other deadline for students is the NAHJ Scholarship Competition, wihch is March 31st. These scholarships are awarded annually to aspiring Latino journalists and other students committed to journalism through the NAHJ RubĂ©n Salazar Scholarship Fund http://www.nahj.org/2010/02/nahj-scholarship-applications-open/

We need people to renew their membership. So far, we have a lot of students renewing, but professionals aren't renewing at a slower pace. So renew your membership and get a discount to our multimedia conferences and the national convention. Pass this on to a friend, colleagues and any other journalists where you can get hands on multimedia training and great networking opportunities.

One last thing on our finances. There has been many members asking about this and many believe NAHJ is in deep trouble. Our campaign was to raise money for our budget shortfall from our convention. We made $30,000 off the convention, but we were expecting $300,000. NAHJ was the only UNITY group to make money, which is amazing because of the current economic times. We didn't make money because companies are tightening their belts and members couldn't afford to go to the conference. We were able to fundraise nearly $100,000 in our fundraising campaign. NAHJ isn't going to shut down or anything like that and we still have the budget shortfall. We actually borrowed money from our own account. We need to repay that and still need you to donate money. So if you can help us out, please donate at the Count Me In Campaign at http://www.nahj.org/support/donate/

Until next time, have a Blessed Day.

Successful NAHJ Region 5 Multimedia Conference in San Marcos

NAHJ Region 5,

Region 5 put together our first of three conferences for the next three months and it was a success. It all started with a challenge from the NAHJ Board to put on multimedia and regional conferences for our membership in regions. Of course, Region 5 was the leader and set the trend. While everybody else is talking about doing it, we did it and I am proud of the members who helped put it together.

Our first multimedia conference was planned today at Texas State University at San Marcos. Lots of stress leading up to it, but more than 30 people enjoyed the all-day conference. I was one of the participants and we had great time learning from our trainers. Great hands on opportunity and everybody seemed to walk happy with the experience.

I would like to thank Dr. Federico Subervi from Texas State who made this possible, Patricio Espinoza, our NAHJ board member from San Antonio, who put on a great class and the other trainers, our local and newest professional chapter, NAHJ Austin, for promoting the event and Michele Gonzalez, our Austin-based staff member, for helping us with registration.

The best part of this conference meeting with NAHJ members who are asking for me to plan a multimedia conference like this in other parts of Texas, including Austin, the Rio Grande Valley and Victoria. We will put them on the books for the fall and have contacts ready to get facilities donated to us.

Next we move on to our Region 5 Regional Conference in Houston on March 20 in one month (see attachments for schedule of events). We are getting help from Rice University for the campus facilities, the local Hispanic journalism group for our town meeting on Friday, March 19, and we are working on a sponsor already for the luncheon. We invited you to come to our Region 5 Conference at Rice University in one month.

After that, we will have our multimedia conference in El Paso on April 10. A similar conference to the one we did today, but we rescheduled it and I am sure with the amount of time available for members to plan for it, they will come.

Please stay in contact with us, follow us on our NAHJ Region 5 Facebook, Twitter accounts and my personal social media accounts listed below.

Of course, the NAHJ Conference will be held in Denver, Colorado this year from June 23-26. We will have our convention at the same time NALEO is having its convention in Denver. If you are one of the first 250 people to register, you'll only pay $250. You can register at www.nahj.org. I promise if you have never been to Denver AKA the Mile HIgh City, you don't want to miss this convention. It is a great convention city and lots of things to do for tourists, including visiting the Rocky Mountains.

Don't forget to follow us on Facebook at NAHJ Region 5 and Twitter at NAHJ Region 5. Thanks.
